If by any chance your video card is ATI then you may have come across this message in mplayer :

[VO_XV] It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available.
[VO_XV] Run ‘xvinfo’ to verify its Xv support and read
[VO_XV] DOCS/HTML/en/video.html#xv!
[VO_XV] See ‘mplayer -vo help’ for other (non-xv) video out drivers.
[VO_XV] Try -vo x11.
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

You need to reboot after the following :
apt-get install firmware-linux firmware-linux-nonfree

It seems the kernel 2.6.32-5 and xorg 1:7.5+6 require the ATI/radeon firmware to work the xv video output right…

I must admit… I couldn’t get a usb key to boot and netinstall… I tried several tips found online… No can do… Shame on me… Hopefully, I still have an old usb cdrom drive! But no way to get the netinst.iso working either… It just wouldn’t mount the CD and find the packages… So I had to use the debian mini.iso. It is very light and installs from the internet after loading just a few basics things. No further troubleshooting from then on…

For working reasons I had to buy this tiny computer… I like Dell because everything goes well when you install GNU/Linux. I didn’t need to do much in order to have the wifi working… Just apt-get install wifi-radar and add what’s necessary in the /etc/network/interfaces config file, as follows :

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
# Wifi
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp

It’s quite light and can easily be carried around… so the wifi must work properly! It’s quite a nice computer actually… The only downside would be its slight tendency to heat up… I must look into this even though it seems I’m not the only one concerned by this problem… For the time being I manage to keep the processors under 56°C by letting some air underneath it… Any thoughts?
